Biography

Karnita Garner is an Extension Environmental Specialist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System in the College of Agriculture, Life and Natural Sciences (CALNS) at Alabama A&M University (AAMU). Karnita received her B.S. in Environmental Science in 1997 and M.S. in Plant and Soil Science in 2001 from AAMU. She then worked as a full-time Research Associate while earning a Ph.D. in Plant and Soil Science with a concentration in Water Resources in 2009. After working jointly as an Extension Specialist and Research Assistant Professor of Water Resources for three years, Karnita joined Alabama Extension solely in 2011. Her current extension interests include advancing outreach efforts that increase the adoption of recommended environmental best management practices (BMPs) in areas such as disaster preparedness. In addition, her research efforts involve assessing the impact of traditional, new, and emerging contaminants on aquatic ecosystems. Karnita is a former NASA EPSCoR Fellow and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Star Fellow. She is also the 2016 recipient of the USDA-NIFA Regional Award for Excellence in Extension. She currently serves as the Team Leader for the Urban Forestry, Wildlife, and Natural Resources Management Team at AAMU and provides statewide leadership over three Extension programs.
